About the River Reef Program

The River Reef program was started to give members of the public the opportunity to become personally involved in efforts to restore the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon. The program is designed to increase public exposure to and appreciation of Martin County's unique waterways.

The River Reef Program has received a number of grants and financial assistance packages from several agencies, including:
  • The Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND)
  • The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)
  • The Martin County Environmental Studies Center
  • The Florida Oceanographic Society
  • Martin County Parks and Recreation Department
The most visible element of the program is the Martin County Reef Trailer, a mobile reef-building operation that transports materials and equipment to various locations, allowing for the quick and inexpensive construction of Reef Ball units
