The Tetrahedron Patch and Stack Reefs are constructed of solid, pyramid-shaped concrete modules specifically designed for artificial reef construction. The tetrahedrons form a stable base for marine life that resists wave forces and encourages the proliferation of aquatic communities.

The Patch Reef was created by deploying five separate smaller areas or “patches” of tetrahedrons, while the Stack Reef is essentially a small mountain of tetrahedrons. MCARP is monitoring both formations to determine which is most effective.

Although diving is possible at the tetrahedron reefs, they are primarily known for fishing. Their high population of baitfish such as mackerel scad and tomtate draws a wide array of pelagic species, which continue to grow in diversity and number as the reefs mature.
